Harnessing digital data for sustainable hemp cultivation: insights from Hemp4Circularity

Although textile hemp is a promising crop, its cultivation presents numerous challenges, some of which remain unidentified. Could collaboration in the Netherlands and abroad be the key to success? With this in mind, Delphy organized a webinar in December in partnership with Hyler on data collection in hemp cultivation, within the Hemp4Circularity project.

Why use digital data in hemp cultivation?

The Hemp4Circularity project, running from 2022 to mid-2026, aims to develop a local, bio-based textile chain in Northwestern Europe. Through digital technologies, it seeks to optimize hemp cultivation and make it more sustainable. Data plays a crucial role in this transformation, helping improve cultivation and harvesting processes while strengthening collaboration across the value chain.

Three key topics of the webinar

The online training focused on three main areas:

  1. Demonstration of the WatchITgrow platform
  2. Data collection through advanced harvesters
  3. Collaboration for smarter data management

An interactive training: new insights and technologies

On December 18, 2024, 36 participants—including farmers, researchers, and industry partners—attended the webinar training on digital data analysis for hemp cultivation. They were introduced to:

  • WatchITgrow, a digital crop monitoring platform that integrates satellite images and field data. This tool helps growers map their hemp crops more accurately and make better-informed decisions.
  • Hyler harvesters, such as the Easy-Turn and Sativa FL20 with bunker, which collect valuable data during harvesting, including swath length, field positions, and soon, fuel consumption. All this information is stored on the Hyler data platform, where growers and researchers can analyze and utilize the data effectively.
